Earthroots is a grassroots conservation organization dedicated to the preservation of wilderness, wildlife and watersheds in Canada, with a focus in Ontario.

Our organization has been on the front lines of wilderness conservation since 1986, when our predecessor organization, the Temagami Wilderness Society (TWS) was formed. The TWS was created to fight for the preservation of rare old growth white and red pine forests in the Temagami region of northern Ontario. After campaign success in the Temagami region, the organization change its name to Earthroots in 1991, in order to broaden the organization's campaign focus beyond the Temagami issue.

Earthroots utilizes a wide range of strategies, including education, advocacy, lobbying, industry pressure, research and direct action to raise public awareness and exert pressure on the government to expand protection of wilderness, wildlife and watersheds in Ontario. Earthroots consists of two separate organizations: Earthroots Fund, a charitable organization (# 135165140 RR0001) which engages in public education, research and lobbying, and Earthroots Coalition, a non-profit organization which engages in advocacy, education, lobbying, and action.

Maintaining the Integrity of Ontario’s Protected Lands
The current provincial government has to introduced multiple consumptive uses into Ontario’s protected areas, including sport hunting (and associated road expansion) and mining. These multiple uses subvert the true definition of "protected areas", and create an unacceptable precedent for the expansion of multiple uses throughout Ontario’s protected areas.
Ontario’s Old-Growth Forests: Spotlight on the Ancient Pines of the Temagami region.
Earthroots has been campaigning around the old-growth forests of Temagami for over a decade. Our work currently focuses reviewing the Ministry of Natural Resources move to larger clearcuts in Temagami and throughout northern Ontario. Earthroots also coordinates an "Ancient Forest Working Holiday" program, which brings volunteers to Temagami to appreciate the tall pines and to clear hiking trails to promote eco-tourism.
Southern Ontario Woodlands
Earthroots expanded its campaign focus in 1999 to include advocating for the conservation of threatened woodlands and green space in southern Ontario. Our Niagara Escarpment educational project involves raising public awareness around the existence of the ancient cliff cedar forests of the Escarpment, the oldest known forest in eastern North America. Earthroots’ Oak Ridges Moraine project focuses on a system of kettle lakes, remnant woodlands and underground aquifers that exist north of Toronto, Ontario.
